An assessment of teachers ' opinions on the effectiveness level of social studies curriculum in preparing the students for the social life ( Case of Diyarbakır city )

Abstract

This descriptive study was administered on 631 classroom teachers and 144 social studies teachers who work in 94 public primary schools in Diyarbakır city centre in 2007-2008 academic year. The data were collected by means of a 25-item Likert type scale. Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of the scale was measured and found to be 0.99. KMO value was calculated to be 0.94 and Bartlett's test was calculated to be 3690,402. Research results were evaluated according to seniority, branch and school's socio-economic level. One way ANOVA, independent group t test, KWH, MWU and LSD tests were used to analyze the data. Social Studies curriculum was found to be efficient to prepare the students for the social life. The teachers who worked at schools having good socio-economic level and those who were new at teaching experience found the social studies curriculum more efficient. Furthermore, in terms of branch variable, social studies teachers found the curriculum more effective than the 4th and 5th grade classroom teachers. It is offered that the schools should improve their physical equipment and the teachers should be given in- service seminars to make the new social studies curriculum more effective.

Betimsel nitelikteki bu araştırma 2007-2008 eğitim-öğretim yılında Diyarbakır ilinde 94 ilköğretim okulunda görev yapan 631 sınıf öğretmeni, 144 tane de Sosyal Bilgiler öğretmeni üzerinde yapılmıştır. Veriler 25 maddelik Likert tipi bir ölçekle toplanmıştır. Ölçeğin Cronbach Alpha güvenirlik katsayısı 0.99, Bartlett testi sonucu 3690,402 ve KMO değeri de 0.94 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Veriler kıdem, branş ve okulun sosyo-ekonomik düzeyi açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Verilerin analizinde Anova, t testi ile KWH, MWU ve LSD testleri kullanılmıştır. Araştırma ile Sosyal Bilgiler dersi öğretim programı öğrencileri sosyal yaşama hazırlama açısından yeterli bulunmuştur. Sosyo-ekonomik açıdan iyi düzey okullarda çalışan ve meslekte yeni olan öğretmenler programı etkili bulmuşlardır. Branş değişkeni açısından ise Sosyal Bilgiler öğretmenleri programı 4. ve 5. sınıf öğretmenlerinden daha etkili bulmuşlardır. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre okulların fiziksel donanımlarının iyileştirilmesi ve öğretmenlere hizmet içi eğitim seminerlerinin verilmesi gibi önerilerde bulunulmaktadır.
