Abstract
Music as a subject of study in the history of philosophy founda place almost in the same time in China and Ancient Greece. Compared to Confucius's disorganized and non-analytical style, Pythagoras examined music in an observational and measurablevisualway, thus forming the basis of music analysis as a discipline. Despite the fact that, radical changes occurred in the Ancient Greek music culture and in the music analysis after Pythagorasists, music remained still as a subject of philosophy andthe Greek tradition in musichas formed thetheoretical basis of modern polyphonic European music. However, both the methods, the basic tools and the main discussions varied in the ancient music analysis. The aim of this study is to reveal the outlines of thesechanges in Greek music analysis occurred by following the historical track. In this context, firstly, the place of music in the main mythological textssuch as Iliadand Odysseywill be discussed, afterwards the thoughts of the founding figures of the tradition inquestion such as Pythagoras, Plato and Aristotle will be summarized.Secondly, the main works on harmonics and musical analysis will be examined and the works of Aristoxenus, Plutarchus and Ptolemy, which enabled the establishment of music as an independent field for the first time, will be discussed. Finally, the outline of Boethius' music theory, which hasshapedthemusiceducationoftheCatholicChurch;andtwo anonymous works, Musica Enchiriadisand Scholia Enchiriadis, which contain the first criticisms of polyphonic music, will be examined.
