Primary school teachers views of violence in schools

Abstract

In recent days violence has become a subject that occupied us with all aspects of fulfilling our responsibilities in terms of both the media and the public. Generally in society violence was perceived as a minor problem in recent years but the changing face of violence, now both parents, educators also big part of community worry about this. In this study violence in primary schools is investigated. The purpose of this research is to present the primary school teachers’ views of violence in schools. For this purpose, in the research, qualitative research methods were used and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 teacher who work in the city center Eskisehir primary schools. According to the result of the research, teachers defined violence as physical violence, verbal violence and psychological violence. Unlike the violence definitions’ of teachers, they indicated school violence such as damage to possessions of the school and expressed opinions about institutional violence. They express types of violent behavior at school as fighting, threatening and swearing and violence is seen more often in the 7th stated students between student in classes. Also teachers often consider the causes of the violence in schools due to reasons coming from the family.

Özet

Siddet konusu tüm boyutları ile son günlerde hem medyayı hem de toplumsal sorumluluklarımızı yerine getirme açısından kisileri mesgul eden bir konu haline geldi. Siddet toplumda genel olarak küçük bir sorun olarak algılanırken son dönemlerde siddetin değisen yüzü, artık hem anne-babaları hem eğitimcileri hem de toplumun genelini kaygılandıracak bir boyuta ulastı. Bu arastırmada ilköğretim okullarındaki siddet kavramı irdelenmeye çalısılmıstır. Arastırmanın amacı; ilköğretim okullarında görev yapan öğretmenlerin okuldaki siddet üzerine ilgili görüslerini ortaya koymaktır. Bu amaçla arastırma, nitel arastırma yöntemleri benimsenerek desenlenmis ve Eskisehir il merkezinde bulunan ilköğretim okullarında görev yapan 20 öğretmenle yarı yapılandırılmıs görüsme gerçeklestirilmistir. Arastırmanın sonuçlarına göre; öğretmenler siddeti fiziksel siddet, sözel siddet, psikolojik siddet seklinde tanımlamıslardır. Okulda siddet deyince, öğretmenlerin siddet tanımlarından farklı olarak okul esyalarına zarar verme gibi olan kurumsal siddette görüsler arasında belirtilmistir. Okulda yasanan siddet davranıslarının türlerini ise kavga, tehdit ve küfür olarak ifade ederken, siddet olaylarının en fazla 7. sınıflarda öğrenci-öğrenci arasında yasandığını belirtmislerdir. Ayrıca okulda yasanan siddet olaylarının nedenlerini çoğunlukla aileden kaynaklanan sebeplere bağlamaktadırlar.
