Secondary school students staying in a boarding house and their relationship with teacher

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate perceptions of secondary school students, who come from rural areas and stay in a secondary school pension, about teacher-student relationship on authoritarian, democratic, and idle dimensions. Research was carried out on a sample of 436 students. At the end of the research, it has been found that students’ perceptions of authoritarian, democratic and idle dimensions of the T-S relationship are generally at mean level. It has been also found that there is not a significant difference according to sex/gender perceptions on democratic dimension of the relationship but perceptions of male students on authoritarian and idle dimensions of the relationship are higher than female students. On the other hand according to the class variable and on authoritarian dimension of the relationship perception of 9th grade students are lower than 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students, on democratic dimension of the relationship, the perceptions of 11th grade students are lower than 9th and 10th grade students; on idle dimension of the relationship, the perceptions of 9th grade students are lower than 10th, 11th and 12th grade students; also 10th grade students’ perceptions are found lower than 11th grade students. According to the type of enrolled school it is also found that on the authoritarian dimension of the relationship, the perceptions of Science High School students are higher than Technical and Vocational High School, on the democratic dimension of the relationship, the perceptions of Anatolian and General High School students are higher than Science High School, the perceptions of Technical and Vocational high school students are higher than Science, General and Anatolian High School students. Finally, on idle dimension of the relationship, the perceptions of Technical and Vocational High School students’ are found lower than Science and General high school students.

Özet

Bu araştırmanın amacı, kırsaldan gelip ortaöğretim pansiyonlarında kalan lise öğrencilerinin öğretmen-öğrenci ilişkisine ilişkin algılarını otoriter, demokratik ve ilgisiz ilişki tipleri çerçevesinde betimlemek ve bazı değişkenler bakımından incelemektir. Araştırma 436 öğrenciden oluşan bir örneklem üzerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma sonunda öğrencilerin, öğretmenleri ile olan ilişkilerini otoriter, demokratik ve ilgisiz ilişki tiplerinde orta düzeyde gördükleri anlaşılmıştır. Araştırma sonunda ayrıca demokratik ilişki tipinde cinsiyete göre anlamlı bir fark bulunmazken; otoriter ve ilgisiz ilişki tiplerinde erkek öğrencilerin algılarının, kız öğrencilerden daha yüksek olduğu görülmüştür. Diğer yandan devam edilen sınıf seviyesine göre, Otoriter ilişki tipinde, 10, 11, ve 12. Sınıftaki öğrencilerin otoriter ilişki algıları 9. Sınıftaki öğrencilerden; ilgisiz ilişki tipinde, 10, 11 ve 12. sınıftaki öğrencilerin ilgisiz ilişki algıları 9. sınıftaki öğrencilerden, ayrıca11, sınıftaki öğrencilerin ilgisiz ilişki algıları 10. Sınıftaki öğrencilerden anlamlı şekilde daha yüksek bulunmuştur. Demokratik ilişki tipinde ise, 9 ve 10. sınıf öğrencilerinin algılarının 11 ve 12. sınıf öğrencilerinden anlamlı şekilde daha yüksek olduğu görülmüştür. Devam edilen okul türüne göre, otoriter ilişki tipinde Fen Lisesi öğrencilerinin algılarının, Teknik ve Mesleki Lise öğrencilerine; demokratik ilişki tipinde, Anadolu ve Genel Lise öğrencilerinin algılarının, Fen Lisesi öğrencilerine; ayrıca Teknik ve Mesleki Lise öğrencilerinin algılarının da, Anadolu Lisesi, Genel Lise ve Fen Lisesi öğrencilerine oranla daha yüksek olduğu görülmüştür. Son olarak ilgisiz ilişki tipinde, Fen ve Genel Lise öğrencilerinin algılarının, Teknik ve Mesleki Lise öğrencilerinden anlamlı şekilde daha yüksek olduğu görülmüştür.
