Abstract

Despite being disregarded by critics for years, the journalistic element in André Malraux’s works has undoubtedly played a major role in this important 20th century writer’s success. The following study aims to achieve two goals. The first is to examine the importance of different journalistic forms in the literary activity of a writer whose work is situated somewhere between fiction and reality. The second is to offer a new glimpse of a writer caught in the middle of the historic events of his time. This analysis will enable us to better understand the complex relationships between several of Malraux’s works and what can be considered the main characteristics of the journalistic esthetic. Clearly, reportage as a genre, due to its constraining discourse, was unable to provide Malraux with an expressive framework worthy of both his ambitions and the fundamental questions he posed regarding the human condition
