The Relationship Between Inflation and Economic Growth in Turkey: Fourier ADL Cointegratıon Approach

Abstract

Inflation rates and economic growth indicators are substantially important for the economies of countries. Although it has been widely studied in the literature, when it is evaluated both from a theoretical point of view and in terms of empirical studies, there is still no consensus in the speech whether inflation rates has a significant effect on economic growth and if there is an effect, what the direction is. The determination of this phenomenon is very important in terms of economic policy. In this study, in order to investigate the effect of inflation rates in Turkey on Turkey's economic growth, the longterm relationship was examined with Fourier ADL Cointegration analysis using monthly data between the period 2008:02-2021:02. As a result of the applied cointegration, it has been observed that the inflation rate and economic growth move together in the long run. In order to determine the direction of this relationship, FMOLS, DOLS and CCR tests were conducted and it was concluded that the increase in inflation rates would have a negatory effect on economic growth in all three tests. This result supports the view that economic growth will be adversely affected as high inflation expectations will lead to negative expectations for the future.

Özet

Enflasyon oranları ve ekonomik büyüme göstergeleri ülkelerin ekonomileri açısından oldukça önem arz etmektedir. Literatürde yaygın bir şekilde incelenmiş olmasına rağmen hem teorik açıdan bakıldığında hem de ampirik çalışmalar boyutunda değerlendirildiğinde günümüzde hala enflasyonun ekonomik büyüme üzerinde anlamlı bir etkiye sahip olup olmadığı ve bir etki mevcut ise bunun yönünün ne olduğu konuşumda fikir birliği hala sağlanmamıştır. Bu olgunun belirlenmesi iktisat politikası açısından oldukça önem arz etmektedir. Bu çalışmada Türkiye’deki enflasyon oranlarının Türkiye’nin ekonomik büyümesi üzerindeki etkisini araştırmak amacıyla 2008:02-2021:02 dönemi arasındaki aylık veriler kullanılarak Fourier ADL Eşbütünleşme analizi ile uzun dönem ilişki incelenmiştir. Uygulanmış olan eşbütünleşme sonucunda enflasyon oranı ve ekonomik büyümenin uzun dönemde birlikte hareket ettikleri gözlenmiştir. Bu ilişkinin yönünü belirlemek için FMOLS, DOLS ve CCR testleri yapılmış ve her üç test içinde enflasyon oranlarındaki artışın ekonomik büyüme üzerinde olumsuz bir etki oluşturacağı soncuna ulaşılmıştır. Bu sonuç yüksek enflasyon beklentisinin gelecek ile olumsuz beklentilere yol açacağından dolayı ekonomik büyümenin olumsuz etkileneceği görüşünü desteklemektedir.
