The effect of prepared activities by using the newspapers in science course on students’ academic achievement

Abstract

Similarities between the issues in newspapers and daily life would help students to havemore effective learning by improving their interests to these issues. Purposes of science andtechnology course which relate to daily life and newspapers which contain data for this course,indicates the suitability of using newspapers in this course. In accordance, the purpose of thisstudy is to determine the effect of using the activities based on newspapers in 5th grade scienceand technology course. Pre-test and post-test experiment-control group quasi-experimentaldesign was used in this study. Data of this study was gathered with the academic achievementtest which developed by researchers. Results of the study indicates that there is a significant effectof science and technology courses which are supported with activities based on newspapers, onstudents academic achievement.

Özet

Gazetelerdeki konuların gerçek hayata benzerlikleri öğrencilerin konulara olan ilgisiniarttırarak, öğrenmenin daha etkili gerçekleşmesine yardımcı olacaktır. Fen ve teknoloji dersiamaçlarının günlük yaşamla ilişki kurmaya yönelik olması ve gazetelerin bu dersin kazanımlarınayönelik verileri içermesi, bu dersin gazete kullanımı ile uygunluğunu göstermektedir. Budoğrultuda bu araştırmanın amacı, 5. sınıf fen ve teknoloji dersinde gazetelerden faydalanarakhazırlanan ders etkinliklerinin, öğrencilerin akademik başarılarına etkisini tespit etmektir.Araştırma 2009-2010 eğitim-öğretim yılında Kocaeli İli İzmit İlçesindeki bir ilköğretim okulunadevam eden, 100 beşinci sınıf öğrencisi ile yapılmıştır. Araştırmada öntest-sontest deney-kontrolgruplu yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonuçları, gazetelerden faydalanılarakhazırlanan ders etkinlikleri ile desteklenen fen ve teknoloji derslerinin, öğrencilerin akademikbaşarısı üzerine anlamlı etkisi olduğunu göstermektedir.
