Abstract

The Causes of Hypocalcemia Following Thyroid Surgery Postoperative hypocalcemia is a relatively common com¬plication following thyroidectomy. Damage, devasculari-zation, or inadvertent removal of the parathyroid glands is the most widely accepted reason, but other causes have been postulated including release of calcitonin during op¬erative manuplation and hungry bone syndrome due to postoperative reversal of thyrotoxic osteodistrophy. The aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence and risk fac¬tors of hypocalcemia following thyroidectomy with the help our clinical experiences and the literature. In this study, 382 cases who underwent thyroidectomy were ana¬lyzed for factors increasing the risk for postoperative hy¬pocalcemia prospectively. The statistical analysis between hypocalcemia and age, the disease process and the locali¬zation and the status of the thyroid fuction, histopatholog-ic data of thyroidectomy materials, primar, or secondary operations, and the performed procedures were performed by using chi square and Fischer exact tests. Clinically ob¬served hypocalcemia was seen in 7 (% 1.8) of the patients, 6 (1.5 %) of them being temporary. Three (0.08 %) of the cases with temporary hypocalcemia were the reoperated ones, the difference was statistically significant (p
