Abstract
Economic growth and level of employment are macroeconomic indicators that are important for both developed and developing countries. The relationship between these two critical indicators has been formulated by Okun (1962) and it is argued that increase of economic growth will reduce the unemployment rate. Although the Okun Law provides a theoretically strong framework and a consistent approach, given the growth performance recorded in the world economy in recent years, the lack of a significant improvement in unemployment rates (jobless growth) has been interpreted as a weakening of the relationship between economic growth and employment. In the light of these discussions, it is aimed to determine whether the causality relation between economic growth and unemployment is consistent with the information provided by the economic theory, in the 34 OECD countries, covering the period 2000-2016. For this purpose, Dumitrescu and Hurlin (2012) causality analysis has been applied and the results show that there is a two-way causality relation between economic growth rate and unemployment rate; so that the Okun Law was found to be valid.
