The Prediction of Parents’ Social Problem Solving on Chidrens’ Social Problem Solving

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between parents' social problem solving skills and children's social problem solving skills. The first sub-purpose of this research is to determine the relationship between sub-dimensions of problem-orientation sub-scale, sub-dimensions of Problem Solving Style subscale, total social problem solving scores and sub-dimensions of child social problem solving, total problem solving of Wally Child Social Problem Solving Detective Game Test. The second sub-purpose of this study is to determine whether the sub-dimensions of parents’ social problem solving sub-scale and total social problem solving predict sub-dimensions of children’s social problem solving and total problem solving. The research was carried out through one of the screening models, namely, the relational screening model. The sample of the study consisted of 324 children and parents of these children attending preschool education institutions of the Ministry of National Education in the 2018-2019 academic year in Eskişehir city center. Social Problem Solving Inventory - Short Form, and Wally Child Social Problem–Solving Detective Game Test were utilized as data collection tools. Data were tested with Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. The findings of the study demonstrated that there was a moderate significant correlation between sub-dimensions of problem-orientation subscale, problem solving styles subscale and child social problem solving of subdimensions. Furthermore, sub-dimensions scores of problem solving style, and problem orientation significantly predicted children social problem solving sub-dimensions and total children social problem solving scores.

Özet Araştırmanın genel amacı ebeveynlerin sosyal problem çözme becerileri ile çocukların sosyal problem çözme becerileri arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesidir. Araştırmanın ilk alt amacı ebeveyn Sosyal Problem Çözme Envanteri – Kısa Formunun Problem Yönelimi alt ölçeğinin alt boyutları, Problem Çözme Tarzı alt ölçeğinin alt boyutları ve toplam sosyal problem çözme ile Wally Çocuk Sosyal Problem Çözme Dedektif Oyun Ölçeğinin alt boyutları ve toplam sosyal problem çözme arasındaki ilişkileri incelemektir. Araştırmanın ikinci alt amacı ise ebeveyn sosyal problem çözme alt ölçeğinin alt boyutlarının ve toplam sosyal problem çözmenin çocukların sosyal problem çözme alt boyutlarını ve toplam sosyal problem çözmelerini yordayıp yordamadığını incelemektir. Araştırma tarama modellerinden ilişkisel tarama yöntemi ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın örneklemini Eskişehir il merkezinde 2018-2019 eğitim- öğretim yılında Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı’na bağlı okul öncesi eğitim kurumuna devam eden 324 ebeveyn ve çocukları oluşturmaktadır. Veriler Sosyal Problem Çözme Envanteri – Kısa Formu ve Wally Çocuk Sosyal Problem Çözme Dedektif Oyun Ölçeği ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde pearson korelasyon katsayısı ve çoklu regresyon kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada ebeveynlerin probleme yönelim ve problem çözme tarzları alt ölçeklerinin alt boyut puanları ile çocukların sosyal problem çözme alt boyut puanları arasında orta düzeyde anlamlı ilişkiler bulunmuştur. Ebeveynlerin probleme yönelim ve problem çözme tarzları alt ölçekleri alt boyut puanları ve toplam sosyal problem çözme puanları, çocukların sosyal problem çözme alt boyut puanlarını ve toplam sosyal problem çözme puanlarını anlamı düzeyde yordamaktadır.
