Value of Compassion: Views of Primary School Teachers and Examples of Activities

Abstract

The aim of this study was to reveal the views of the primary school teachers about the value of compassion and about the acquisition of this value by primary school students. Another aim of the study was to prepare examples of activities related to the value of compassion based on the views of primary school teachers and the discussions in the literature. Phenomenology design, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. The study group consisted of 13 primary school teachers working in Kocaeli and Istanbul and one guidance counsellor working in a primary school. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain teachers' views on compassion and compassion education. In the data analysis, interview records were transcribed and the content analysis method was used. According to the results, most of the teachers defined compassion as a feeling given to man by Allah to satisfy the need of someone. It was seen that most of the teachers used value teaching approaches through inculcation and action / behaviour in teaching the value of compassion. Teachers stated that they tried to be the right role model while students acquire the value of compassion and they approached their students with love and respect. It was found that teachers recommended cooperating with the family, extending the help activities in the schools, and making visits to the patients and nursing homes in order to acquire students with the value of compassion. Teachers stated that there was a positive change in student behaviour as a result of all activities. In the light of the findings of the research, it can be suggested that value of compassion should be included more in the curriculum, students should be kept away from violence, students should take correct profiles, and compassion education should be started in the family

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı, sınıf öğretmenlerinin merhamet değeri ve budeğerin ilkokul öğrencilerine kazandırılması hakkındaki görüşleriniortaya koymaktır. Çalışmanın bir diğer amacı ise sınıföğretmenlerinin görüşleri ve literatürdeki tartışmalardan yolaçıkarak merhamet değeri ile ilgili etkinlik örnekleri hazırlamaktır.Araştırmada nitel araştırma tekniklerinden olgubilim desenikullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Kocaeli ve İstanbulilinde görev yapmakta olan 13 sınıf öğretmeni ve 1 ilkokulda çalışanrehberlik öğretmeni oluşturmuştur. Öğretmenlerin merhamet veeğitimi hakkındaki görüşlerini almak için yarı yapılandırılmışgörüşmeler yapılmıştır. Verilerin çözümlenmesinde içerik analiziyöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre öğretmenlerinçoğu merhameti; kaynağı Allah olan, onun tarafından insanaverilmiş bir duygu ve birilerinin ihtiyacını gidermek şeklindetanımlamaktadır. Öğretmenlerin çoğunun merhamet değerininöğretiminde değer kazandırma yaklaşımlarından telkin veeylem/davranış yoluyla değer öğretimi yaklaşımlarını kullandıklarıbelirlenmiştir. Öğretmenler merhamet değerini kazandırırkendoğru rol model olmaya çalışıp ve öğrencilerine sevgi ve saygıylayaklaştıklarını ifade etmişlerdir. Öğretmenlerin merhamet değerinikazandırabilmek için aileyle işbirliği yapılmasını, okullardayardımlaşma faaliyetlerinin yaygınlaştırılmasını, hasta ve huzureviziyaretlerinin yapılmasını tavsiye ettikleri belirlenmiştir.Öğretmenler yapılan etkinlikler neticesinde öğrenci davranışlarındaolumlu yönde değişiklik olduğunu belirtmişlerdir. Araştırmabulguları ışığında öğretim programlarında merhamet değerine dahaçok yer verilmesi, öğrencilerin şiddetten uzak tutulması,öğrencilerin rol modelleri örnek almalarının sağlanması, merhameteğitiminin ailede başlaması gerektiği önerilerinde bulunulabilir.
