Life Skills Scale-High School Form Development: A Study of Validity and Reliability

Abstract
The aim of the study is to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool to determine the life skill levels of high school students. The study group consists of 801 students who study in 9, 10, 11 and 12th grades in Ankara. The five-point Likert scale consists of 16 items. The scale has four sub-dimensions (self-knowledge, interpersonal communication, responsibility and career planning). In order to determine the construct validity of the Life Skills Scale-High School Form (LSS-HSF), exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were applied. As a result of exploratory factor analysis (EFA), it was determined that the total variance explained was 52% and the total score of the LSS-HSF could be obtained. The results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), show that the model has good fit (χ2 = 255.32, sd = 100, RMSEA = .059, SRMR = .0511, NNFI = .930, CFI = .942). In the reliability studies of the scale, internal consistency coefficients (Cronbach α) obtained separately from the data sets used for EFA and CFA were calculated as .83 and .81, respectively. The findings show that the scale is a valid and reliable scale that can be used to determine the life skill levels of high school students.
Özet
Bu araştırmanın amacı, lise öğrencilerinin yaşam becerileridüzeyini belirlemek amacıyla geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçme aracıgeliştirmektir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Ankara ilinde 9, 10,11 ve 12’nci sınıfta öğrenim gören toplam 801 öğrencioluşturmaktadır. Beşli Likert tipi olan ölçek 16 maddedenoluşmaktadır. Ölçeğin dört alt boyutu (kendini tanıma, kişiler arasıiletişim, sorumluluk ve kariyer planlama) bulunmaktadır. YaşamBecerileri Ölçeği-Lise Formu’nun(YBÖ-LF) yapı geçerliğininbelirlenmesi amacıyla açımlayıcı ve doğrulayıcı faktör analiziuygulanmıştır. Açımlayıcı faktör analizi sonucunda açıklanantoplam varyansın %52 olduğu ve YBÖ-LF’nin toplam puanınınalınabileceği belirlenmiştir. Yapılan doğrulayıcı faktör analizisonucu (χ2=255,32, sd=100, RMSEA=.059, SRMR=.0511,NNFI=.930, CFI=.942) modelin iyi uyuma sahip olduğunugöstermektedir. Ölçeğin güvenirlik çalışmalarında AFA ve DFAiçin kullanılan veri setlerinden ayrı ayrı elde edilen iç tutarlılık(cronbach α) katsayıları sırasıyla .83 ve .81 olarak hesaplanmıştır.Elde edilen bulgular, ölçeğin lise öğrencilerinin yaşam becerileridüzeyini belirlemek için kullanılabilecek geçerli ve güvenilir birölçek olduğunu göstermektedir.
