The Dystopian Representations in the Films of Yorgos Lantimos

Abstract

One of the most striking directors of recent times Yorgos Lanthimos, tackles authentic subjects in his films with an extraordinary narrative style. Lanthimos puts forth his criticism of the social order and values through dystopian representations in his films. This work seeks to evaluate the reflection of the dystopia concept that represents negative thoughts and designs towards social order through the cinematic approach of Lanthimos. The study contains findings on the relationship of cinema and dystopia possessing power to critique and the dystopian elements in the films of director Lanthimos. In order to evaluate the dystopian cinema of Lanthimos his film The Lobster was selected. The film that tells about a society where living alone is forbidden, and has various metaphoric narratives, has been analyzed with a qualitative approach and descriptive method. According to the findings, Lanthimos puts forth a dystopian cinema perspective that represents concepts such as limitation of freedom, loss of humanitarian values, alienation, and despair. However, instead of using developed science fiction based elements Lanthimos moves with assumptions towards the closed society.

Son dönemin dikkat çeken yönetmenlerinden birisi olan Yorgos Lanthimos, filmlerindeözgün konuları, alışılmışın dışında bir anlatı tarzıyla ele almaktadır. Lanthimos,toplumsal düzene ve değerlere karşı olan eleştirilerini filmlerindeki distopyan temsillerile ortaya koymaktadır. Bu çalışma, toplumsal düzene ilişkin olumsuz düşüncelerive tasarımları ifade eden distopya kavramının sinemaya yansımasını, Lanthimos’unsinematografik yaklaşımı aracılığıyla değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmadaeleştirel bir güce sahip sinema ile distopya arasındaki ilişkiye ve yönetmen Lanthimos’unfilmlerindeki distopyan unsurlara ilişkin tespitler yer almaktadır. Lanthimos’un distopyansinemasını değerlendirmek amacıyla The Lobster filmi seçilmiştir. Yalnız yaşamanınyasaklandığı bir toplumu anlatan ve çeşitli metaforik anlatılara sahip olan film nitelyöntem ve betimleme tekniği ile analiz edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgulara göre Lanthimos,özgürlüklerin kısıtlanması, insani değerlerin yitirilmesi, yabancılaşma, umutsuzluk vb.gibi kavramları temsil eden distopyan bir sinema anlayışını ortaya koymaktadır. AncakLanthimos, çoğu distopya gibi gelişmiş bilimkurgu unsurları yerine kapalı toplumayönelik varsayımla hareket etmektedir.
