Abstract

The media is one of the important tools for science to reach the public and for the public to understand science. For science communication, it is significant to analyse how the media conveys science to the public and to identify its problematic areas. With the recognition that science journalism has a very important mission, in this study, science news published in Sabah, Sözcü, Hürriyet and Posta, which are newspapers with the highest circulation in Turkey between the 1st and the 14th of October 2019 were investigated. The subject of the study is how the science news published in the newspapers in Turkey is presented, which news is conveyed and published as science news and the relevance of the news with scientific reality. It is considered that the study is significant in order to understand and analyse this relevance, and to contribute to the new ideas for solutions of problematic areas. Content analysis method was used in the study. A total of 3981 news item were identified in this period. 3981 news published and 100 of them have the characteristics of science news. These news articles were analysed under 5 main categories and 40 subcategories. According to the findings and results of the study, only 2.51% of the total number of articles in the studied newspapers have the characteristics of science news. The findings revealed that the science is not newsworthy for the written press in Turkey. It is also observed that the newspapers remain weak in science journalism not only in terms of quantity, but also in quality. The use of sensational, surprising and exaggerated language in science news and the preference for the surprising and absurd contents instead of rational knowledge indicates the tabloidization of science news.
