Abstract

In this study, the relationship between the GINI coefficient that used to measure the income inequality and luxury goods import is examined for selected countries. In the literature, goods which demand elasticity is greater than 1 are called luxury goods. In classical demand theory, the increase in demand for luxury goods is higher than the increase in income. However, even if the income levels are low, the situation where there is a high demand for these luxury goods is called snob effect. This conspicuous consumption can increase the import of luxury goods because of lack of supply or/and high demand of luxury goods in domestic markets. In this study, the relationship between the income status measured by the GINI coefficient and the imports of luxury goods in the society was examined and it was investigated which of the selected countries consumed ostentation. In this context, it is researched which of the selected countries have conspicuous consumption. In this study, this causality relationship of the countries that make up the panel was investigated by the causality analysis of Dumitrescu-Hurlin and Kónya. While Dumitrescu-Hurlin indicates causality on the panel as a whole, Kónya causality allows country-based coefficient and sign results. Considering to the results of the analysis as whole panel, there was no causality from income distribution to the import variable, but causality emerged from the import to the income distribution. On a country basis, causality analysis from GINI coefficient to import has been examined and significant results have been reached in 9 of the 13 countries that make up the pa
