Abstract

This is the story of Osmanbey, a region in Istanbul founded in the second half of the 19th century and its founder, calligrapher and printer Osman Zeki Bey who was the Chancellor at the Palace of Abdülhamid II. Osman Bey was given the permissi- on to print the Quran for the first time. The story continues with the life of Vildan (Ömer) Gizer Hanım, the granddaughter of Osman Bey who was one of the first Turkish women painters. The article which is a cross section from an Ottoman family story at the turn of the century is written by the great granddaughter of Osman Bey and the granddaughter of Vildan Hanım.
