Abstract
By the end of the 1940s, a music revolution of the young Turkish Republic had aimed to create national music. Turkish Folk Music was selected for this aim. A search for an anthology of Turkish Folk Music in Anatolia had begun. Some ethnomusicologists like Bela Bartok were invited to Turkey to attend this collecting process of Turkish Folk Music. At the start of this process it had been decided that Turkish Folk Music was national music, in addition to polyphonyic music. Turkish Folk Music was coded as national music while its history was ignored. That brought about a line of tension for the founding elites. This paper is an attempt to investigate how that tension arose and the reaction it received within its long history.
