A comparative study of adornment in the age of ignorance and the era of the prophet Muhammad

Abstract

The era of the Prophet Muhammad and the period before Islam (recognised by Muslims as the Age of Ignorance) differed greatly in many ways. One fundamental difference was the concept of adornment. The conversion from polytheism and idolatry to Islam and the belief in one Creator brought huge changes in women's behaviour, dress and preferred elements of beauty. This article tries to compare the Age of Ignorance and the era of the Prophet Muhammad focusing on. the subject of adornment. Câhiliye ile Hz. Peygamber devri arasında önemli farklılıklar mevcuttur. Bu farklılıkların bariz bir şekilde gözlemlendiği uygulama alanlarından birisi de süslenmedir. înanç noktasında putperestlikten tevhide doğru yaşanan büyük değişimin yansımaları, her alanda olduğu gibi süslenme alanında da etkisini göstermiş, farklılaşan kadın ve süslenme algısına bağlı olarak kıyafetten takıya, makyajdan saç ve vücut bakımına kadar hemen hemen bütün uygulamalarda küçük ya da büyük bir takım değişikliklere gidilmiştir. Bu makale, Câhiliye ile Hz. Peygamber devri süslenme anlayışını karşılaştırmalı olarak ele alıp; değişen ve dönüşen uygulamalara işaret etmektedir.
