NEGLECTED SUBJECT IN THE FORMATION OF NATIONAL IDENTITY: THE WOMAN

Abstract

No doubt that woman plays a key role as the subject of the question “who” and in the formation of biological and cultural construction of identity in the period of the Turkish Republic during the formation of National Identity. Yet she could not find her well-deserved place in nationalism which is an ideology of power and in the political arena that nationalism is carried out. Within this scope, this study aims to analyze the place of woman as substantially belonging to the public sphere. On the other hand, we see that she is excluded from the public sphere in modernization or construction of identities. In this sense, theories of nationalism will be analyzed in the first place within the frame of positivist methodology under subjects of modernity and nationalism. Finally, debates on gender inherent nationalism which gives a new impulse to the theories of nationalism will take place

Millî kimliğin inşa sürecinde, kim sorusunun öznesi olarak önemli bir yer tutan ve kimliğin biyolojik ve kültürel oluşumunda ve kuşaktan kuşağa aktarımında kilit bir rol oynayan kadın, kamusal bir iktidar ideolojisi olan milliyetçilik ve onun yürütüldüğü politik arenada hak ettiği yeri bulamamıştır. Bu kapsamda çalışmanın amacı, kimliklerin kurgusunda veya modernizasyonunda kamusal alandan dışlanan kadının, aslında kamusal alana ve bu alanın özgün öznesi, kimliğe yön veren özne olması bakımından ulusal/millî kimliklerin oluşumunda yerini incelemektir. Bu bağlamda öncelikle modernite ve milliyetçilik başlığında pozitivist metodoloji ekseninde milliyetçilik kuramları incelenecektir. Daha sonra ise milliyetçilik kuramlarına yeni bir soluk getiren milliyetçiliğin doğasında toplumsal cinsiyet tartışmalarına yer verilecektir
