Abstract

The Predict-Observe-Explain (POE) strategy involves students revealing the results of the predictions, discussing the reasons for their predictions, putting forth the observations, and eventually explaining the variance between the observation and prediction. Studies have uncovered that the POE strategy is substantially used in science education, yet a few studies have been conducted in relation to mathematics education. One of the topics that can be taught through this strategy is geometric location problems. Since the related literature has revealed that prospective teachers try to make their predictions using a few points and they could not realize a complete experience process for the accuracy of their thinking. Thus, this research has examined how POE strategy operates during the solution of geometric location problems by prospective elementary school mathematics teachers via the GeoGebra dynamic mathematics software. The research has employed a case study method. The participants of the research consist of 3rd-grade six elementary school prospective mathematics teachers. The research data have been collected through worksheets and interviews. The research data have been analyzed through qualitative data analysis methods. The research results have revealed that most of the prospective candidates made incorrect predictions, yet all of them changed their predictions with the correct responses thanks to the correct models they created via GeoGebra software despite having difficulty in the observation phase of the strategy. In this regard, it is worth asserting that the usage of the POE strategy during software-aided solutions of geometric location problems is an effective tool in encouraging prospective mathematics teachers to embrace the geometric locations.
