Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the role of informal workplace learning in shaping teachers towards students and the relationship between learning and the development of democratic teacher attitudes towards students. Data for this study were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted with twenty 4th grade public primary school teachers in a district center in Istanbul. The teachers interviewed were selected by utilizing Gözütok’s Democratic Attitude Scale and the data were analyzed through the content analysis method. The findings of the study show that informal learning taking place as a result of the interaction between the teacher and the school administration, colleagues, and students can impede or promote the development of democratic teachers’ attitudes towards students. Teachers’ narratives suggest that administrators’ undue pressure on teachers reduce the likelihood of teachers’ demonstrating democratic attitudes towards their students while less hierarchical relationships between teachers and principals contribute to a positive school climate and promote the development of democratic attitudes towards students. The findings also point to the importance of the role of informal learning through interaction between colleagues and how this interaction is perceived by teachers to be contributing to their development of more democratic attitudes towards students.
