Abstract
The capitalist system started to restructure itself to overcome the economic crisis encountered during the second phase of 1970s. With this purpose, the new right-wing policies were put into effect and the social welfare state policies were cleared off day by day. These policies adopted during global scale restructuring influenced Turkey as well and "January 24 Decisions" that were put into effect on January 24, 1980 and inequalities on the income distribution increased more. In line with the restructuring of the capitalist system, significant transformations were observed in the media; the contents of the media determined in accordance with market conditions had changed in time and also media mentality that gave priority on the common good principle had been abandoned. This study evaluates the transformations in manufacturing structure and new rightwing policies that become prevalent in the restructuring process of capitalism within the second phase of 1970s. In addition, the study deals with presentation of workers protests and union movements on the basis of mission of the media which is used as a means of legitimation of the subject policies. Accordingly, this study discusses the presentation of TEKEL (Directorate General for Monopolies) workers protests that had taken place from December 15, 2009 to March 3, 2010 considering Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet and Zaman journals as a case study. The study is analysed by critical discourse method. It is possible to say that the newspapers analysed in detail as part of the study are substantially similar in terms of their ideological positions that support structural adherence. As a result, the discourse of the news is determined by the ideological background of each newspaper.
