Abstract
It can be seen that Immanuel Wallerstein s intellectual interest spreads over a wide area. The purpose of this paper is to determine the main directions of Wallerstein s works. In our opinion, three main areas can be suggested. The first of these is the new social movements , the next is the thesis of themodern world-system and capitalist world-economy , and the last one is the world-system analysis. Wallerstein s challenges on new social movements, which seem to be completely against the post-war (the world wars) capitalist world economy as a system, analyse in depth the anti-systemic movements. The modern world-system thesis, on the other hand, analyses the history of a world economy, a capitalist world economy, which emerged in Western Europe in the 16th century lasting until the 20th century. Finally, the world-system analysis includes how the dominant epistemology and methods which are subjected to the main disciplines of the social sciences have caused binaries and bifurcation in time, and the origins of this complexity, and alternative solutions.
Özet
Immanuel Wallersteinın entelektüel ilgisinin çok geniş bir alana yayıldığı görülebilmektedir. Bu yazının amacı I. Wallersteinın çalışmalarındaki temel doğrultuları tespit etmektir. Bizce başlıca üç alan seçilebilir. Bunlardan ilki yeni toplumsal hareketler , diğeri modern dünya-sistemi ve kapitalist dünya-ekonomisi tezi, sonuncusu ise dünya- sistemleri analizidir. Yeni toplumsal hareketler üzerine Wallerstein; iki dünya savaşı sonrası dönemde kapitalist dünya ekonomisini bir sistem olarak bütünüyle karşısına almış gibi görünen meydan okumaları, sistem karşıtı hareketleri derinlemesine analiz etmektedir. Modern dünya-sistemi teziözellikle 16. yyda Batı Avrupada ortaya çıktığı haliyle bir dünyaekonominin, kapitalist dünya-ekonomisinin, 20 yyla dek sürecek geçmişinin sistemsel analizini yapmaktadır. Son olarak, sosyal bilimlerin başlıca disiplinlerinin intisap ettikleri hâkim epistemoloji ve metotların zamanla nasıl bir ikiliğe ve çatallanmaya yol açtıklarını ve bu karmaşıklığın kökenlerinialternatif çözüm önerilerini kapsayan dünya-sistemleri analizidir.
