Abstract

Islam is a form of religious values consisting of the principles of faith, worship and morality. All the intellectual activities of people throughout history have occurred in the form of either detecting the existence of something or investigating a fact or making an assessment of something. As a result, existence, knowledge and value have become the three most fundamental issues in the history of thought. Morality, which is a field of value in particular, is a phenomenon that belongs only to man within beings and is of age with human history. Therefore, it is a fact that the Ottoman Empire, which ruled the world for nearly six centuries, has an Islamic morality that is full of virtues and moral perfection. It is seen that the Ottoman Empire experienced this morality in its early periods and the state rose with glory and honor in the same way. However, when morality began to deteriorate later, the state was also shaken and shrunk, and the end was about to collapse. The idea that moral corruption had a major role in the weakening of the state was generally accepted in society, and in order to eliminate this negativity, the activity of writing and printing morality books began. Therefore, in the 19. century it is seen that many moral books were written and some of these books were taught in schools. The belief that social development will take place by not neglecting moral education and training in schools has gradually increased the number of moral textbooks to be taught in schools. One of these works is the work of Ali Seydi Bey, one of the Ottoman moral educators of the last period, called “Terbiye-i Ahlakiyye ve Medeniyye”. The purpose of this study is to analyze the first part of Ali Seydi Bey's work, which he wrote as three parts, by transferring it to modern Turkish. The work, which is in line with the educational policy of the period in which it was written, was taught in ethics classes in schools for a long time. The study examined the religious and historical origins of the opinions of the author, comparing them with today's educational thinking, and also determined the ideas that can be used in moral education studies. The first part of the work, which consists of 4 parts including cleanliness, respect for parents, homeland and morality, except for the preface and the introduction, was written primarily with the aim of raising a good citizen, happy family members and happy society and moral individuals besides being a good servant to Allah. The work, written in Ottoman Turkish, is supported by poems and couplets. In his study, it was determined that he envisioned teaching moral education to children, which is one of the most important areas of religious education
