Abstract
Gnosticism has influenced many religious and philosophical movements throughout history. According to the Gnostic understanding, Godly knowledge can be obtained through some kind of individual experience. This knowledge is a knowledge placed directly by God in the human heart without resorting to rational evidence. The roots of Gnostic thought, which has made its influence felt in different segments of Islamic thought from Shia to Sufism and found existence as an alternative epistemology, goes back as far as the ancient cultures dating back to Islam and even preChristianity. Issues such as the transcendental understanding of God, the dualistic vision of the world, savior knowledge, and the inner interpretation of religious texts are prominent in gnostic thought. The first manifestations of Gnosticism in Islamic history emerged in Shiite Gulat sects. However, these manifestations do not have a multi-system character and at the same time do not allow a holistic evaluation. One of the main reasons for this is that there is insufficient data due to the fact that they belong to a very early period of Islam, and the information given by the heresiographers about them is of distortive or exaggerated natüre due to some sectarian concerns. However, in the following period, Gnostic thought, which emerged more systematically and developed through Shi'ism, especially Ismailism, Sufism, and Ishraqi philosophy, seriously affected Islamic thought. We come across Shi'ite sects such as Kaysâniyya, Bayâniyya, Mansûriyya, Mughîriyya and Khattâbiyya, who were distinguished by some gnostic ideas in the early periods of Islam. Since it will go beyond the boundaries of an article to deal with all of these groups, in this study, the reflections and effects of Gnosticism in ShiaGulat thought will be tried to be determined only with reference to the Beyâniyye party. Thus, a better understanding of other gnostic thinking styles that emerged in the next process will be opened.
