Abstract
In Ahmet Mithat Efendis narration which was indited as a story teller tale and monolog, the institution of marriage was discussed; concepts such as beauty, ugliness, love, envy, equity and loyalty that affect women-men relationships were handled. Ahmet Mithat who included himself in the narration as a writer, started out promising to tell a tale at the beginning but continued with the meta fiction method. Mrs Mahcemal and Mr Cemal who are the major characters of the narration and who appear towards the end of the narration are an ugly but a happy husband and wife. Ahmet Mithats one of the first novels, Tale of Wife and Husband which was published in 1875 is an important work in terms of reflecting the writers appreciation of the institution of marriage, the sense of equity in women-men relationships, mens and societys perspective of women in Reform Era; and it is also worth studying since the writer can relate the narrator, readers and the text in an amusing relation.

Ahmet Mithat Efendinin meddah hikâyesi tarzında ve monolog şeklinde kaleme aldığı anlatıda evlilik kurumu ele alınmakta; kadın-erkek ilişkilerinde etkili olan güzellik, çirkinlik, sevgi, kıskançlık, eşitlik ve sadakat gibi kavramlar işlenmektedir. Kendini yazar olarak anlatıya dâhil eden Ahmet Mithat, masal anlatma vaadi ile başladığı anlatıyı üstkurmaca bir yöntemle sürdürür. Anlatının temel karakterleri olan ve karşımıza ancak anlatının sonuna yaklaşırken çıkan Mahcemal Hanım ile Cemal Bey, anlatının karı koca tipleridir ve özellikleri çirkin ama mutlu bir çift olmalarından ibarettir. Ahmet Mithatın 1875te yayınlanan ilk eserlerinden olan Karı Koca Masalı; yazarın evlilik kurumuna verdiği önemi, kadın-erkek ilişkilerinde eşitlik anlayışını, Tanzimat döneminde erkeklerin ve toplumun kadına bakışını yansıtması bakımından önemli bir eser; yazar, anlatıcı, okuyucu ve metin arasında eğlenceli bir ilişki kurmayı başarması noktasında da incelemeye değer bir anlatıdır.
