Abstract

In the Hierarchy of Needs created by Maslow, who studies the life of the individual in steps from birth to death, the feeling of belonging and belonging to the place is in the third stage and this is one of the most important elements that ensures the vital satisfaction of the person. In some cases, however, the individual is confronted with conditions that necessarily affect his or her basic need. One of them is migration. Since the date records were kept, migrations, which continue its existence first as a location and then as a country change, have arisen due to certain reasons. While migrations formerly stem from climate conditions and wars, then they occur as a result of economic, social and political reasons. For groups and communities that are the main participants of migration, breaking away from their motherland, in which they opened their eyes to the world, greatly damages the sense of belonging in their self-perceptions. This table is most tragically reflected in the literature of the countries. In our study the phenomenon of immigration in “Natasha” written by David Bezmozgis, who is Russian-Canadian writer that has experienced personally this phenomenon by having to move with his family from Riga - Latvia dependent on the Soviet Union to Toronto – Canada, stating that the traces of his life can be seen and felt from time to time in his work even though it is not entirely autobiographical, will be handled according to Maslow's belonging approach. In the work in which seven-year-old hero's transition from childhood to manhood is sorted chronologically, the child growing up and maturing in each story reveals how he copes with the tragedy of migration and how Maslow's concept of belonging and belonging to the place comes true under difficult conditions.
