Abstract

The dialectical relationship between the “distinctive” and “solid” characteristics of objects and the “fluid” nature of consciousness, constituting the epistemology of modernist aesthetics, concurrently has shaped the literary creativity of Virginia Woolf, one of the most important representatives of modernist literature. The success of Woolf's fiction, in which the literary perspective constantly shifts from the subjective consciousness of different characters to the depictions in rich metaphorical language and almost with an impressionist rigor the color, texture and spatial relationship of objects, stems from her understanding and successfully recreating the epiphanic characteristics of objects corresponding with the affect of the modernist characters. In this context, Woolf's Solid Objects, which we will discuss in this study, becomes meaningful as such. The story is about a promising politician John, who one day suddenly decides to obsessively collect lifeless, stone-like “solid” objects, and these objects gradually ‘capture’ his consciousness, both literally and metaphorically, to create a new reality. This is in line with the idea that Sigmund Freud's “Mourning and Melancholy” (1917) suggested that melancholia, which he later developed in his subsequent texts, caused an initial loss and that our identification with the lost object is in fact a futile effort of suppressing our urge to “return to the inanimate”. In addition, modernism, where “all that is solid has melted”, where daily life, values and human relations are constantly shifting, and the crisis environment referred by Julia Kristeva as “symbolic negation of loss” are also conducive to the artistic expression of melancholia. Obsessive quest for absolute truth characteristic of the pre-modern era was replaced by objective relativism, thus led the modern subject, and therefore the modernist characters in literature, to ontological loneliness, existential stringency, and necessary self-reflexivity. Similarly, we can see the self-reflexive feature of modernist literature as a melancholic reflection of the longing of the modernist subject for the bygone “firm and indivisible unity”. As it is seen, the concept of melancholy appears in multiple levels in modernist literature, and especially when we examine carefully, Woolf's corpus provides a generous field of research. With that being said, the aim of this study is to examine the relationship between modernist literature and melancholy aesthetics in the context of Woolf's Solid Objects and to trace the organic link between object/subject relationship and melancholy.
