Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Autonomy in nursing, has been described as self-control, and self-regulation of nurses in their working environments, Besides ability to make their decisions on nursing care, and being independent in their own practices. AIM: The study was carried out to determine how the nurses perceived their levels of individual and professional autonomy and to examine the factors affecting autonomy in nurses. METHOD: This research planned as a descriptive design was carried out with 214 nurses who volunteered to participate in a research and training hospital. Data were collected with the Individual Questionnaire Form, Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale and Nursing Activity Scale. In the analysis of data, number and percentage distributions, mean scores, Spearman’s, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U Test were used. RESULTS: The mean scores for “Sociotropy” subscale of Sociotropy Autonomy Scale (64.43±15.72); for the “Autonomy” subscale (81.31±14.41) and the Nursing Activity Scale (176,15) were calculated. Statistically significant correlations were found between marital status, age groups of the nurses and mean score of Sociotropy subscale of Sociotropy Autonomy Scale, and also between mean score of Freedom” and “Preference for Solitude” subscale and their working years (p<0.05). A significant relationship was determined between the mean score of Nursing Activity Scale, and their educational status (p<0.05). There was a positive correlation between Sociotropy Autonomy Scale and Nursing Activity Scale scores. CONCLUSION: It has been determined that he sociotropic and autonomic personality traits of the nurses participated in the study were of moderate level. According to evaluation based on the Nursing Activity Scale, nurses’ professional autonomy was found to be of moderate level. Also; it ihas been concluded that there is a positive relationship between ındividual and professioanal autonomy of nurses.
