The frequency of usage of learning strategies in geography lessons by the 9th grade students in high schools

Abstract

In this study we have tried to establish how often the 9th grade students in High Schools use learning strategies. For this reason we developed a scale which consisted of 34 items. Alpha reliability coefficient was found as 0,82 after the analysis of the test. According to the data obtained from the results of the scale, the most common learning strategies used by the students are underlining the important parts of the texts related to different subjects in the book, taking notes during the lesson, writing down small notes on any empty space on the page in the book. The strategies they used the least are making up songs or stories using geographical features and concepts, making use of CDs and VCDs.

Özet

Bu araştırmada, 9. sınıf öğrencilerinin coğrafya dersinde öğrenme stratejilerini kullanma durumları ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu amaçla 34 maddeden oluşan bir ölçek geliştirilmiştir. Ölçeğin Cronbach Alpha iç tutarlılık katsayısı 0,82 olarak bulunmuştur. Hazırlanan ölçeğin uygulanması sonucu elde edilen verilere göre; kitaptaki önemli yerlerin altını çizme, ders işlenirken not tutma, kitabın çeşitli yerlerine not düşme öğrencilerin en fazla kullandıkları stratejilerdir. Çeşitli coğrafi özellikleri ve kavramları şarkıya ve hikayeye dönüştürme, ders çalışırken CD ve VCD’lerden yararlanma ise öğrencilerin en az yararlandıkları stratejilerdir.
