Abstract
The tradition of giving and receiving gifts is one of the good virtues tying our people together. We can see that the habit of giving and receiving gits from all falks of life reflects itself in our literature and that the concept of gifts is used with new meanings. We understand that gifts sometimes gain meaning in realtion to the environment and time as well as with birth. In the Divan poetry the word gift -is used as “pîşkeş, armağan, hedâya, atâ, caba, tuhfe” (synonyms for gift)- is the product of a delicate taste and a kind soul as it reflects to the poems. The understanding of gift of the Divan poets differs according to the age in which they live and according to their personal features. The rich meanings of gift are identified as a result of surveying the Divan and an evaluation was made about the place and importance of gift in the Divan poetry.
