INVESTIGATING PROFESSIONAL DISPOSITIONS OF COUNSELOR CANDIDATES

PSİKOLOJİK DANIŞMAN ADAYLARININ MESLEĞE İLİŞKİN KİŞİSEL EĞİLİMLERİNİN İNCELENMESİ

Abstract

The current study was aimed in an attempt to investigate the development of professional dispositions among a sample of undergraduate counselor education candidates according to their gender, year of training, reason the candidate selected counselor education as the training area, and the candidate’s perception of and significance of the counseling profession. The participants in this study were 431 (364 female, 67 male) undergraduate university students from two state universities in a big city in Turkey. Data were collected through the Professional Disposition Scale for Counselor Candidates and the use of a personal data form for demographic information. This instruments yields six sub dimension (diversity tolerance, compassionate communication with clients, prosocial tendency, positive attitude toward live, self-awareness / self-control and openness to new experience) and total scores. Analysis of the data strongly indicated that female subjects demonstrated a higher level of professional dispositional development than did the male participants. When evaluating the changes in dispositional development across the four years of education all scores were observed to improve with significant increases in compassionate communication and self-awareness and self-control dimensions. The results indicated that those students who elected counseling training because of a strong personal preference outscored participants who entered counselor training for some other reason. Participants reported that counseling was of value because it provided help to others scored significantly higher than other groups. Findings were discussed according to literature and some suggestions were provided.

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı lisans düzeyindeki psikolojik danışman adaylarının cinsiyetlerine, sınıflarına, psikolojik danışma eğitimini seçme nedenlerine ve alanının neden önemli olduğuna yönelik görüşlerine göre mesleğe ilişkin kişisel eğilimlerinin değişip değişmediğini ortaya koymaktır. Çalışmanın katılımcıları İç Anadolu Bölgesi’ndeki büyük bir şehirde bulunan iki devlet üniversitesindeki toplam 431 Rehberlik ve Psikolojik Danışmanlık programı öğrencisidir. Veriler Mesleğe İlişkin Kişisel Eğilimleri Değerlendirme Ölçeği ve Kişisel Bilgi Formu ile toplanmıştır. Ölçekten toplam puan ve altı alt boyuta ilişkin (farklıklara saygı, kişilerarası ilişkilerde özen, insanlara ve yardım etmeye yönelik olma, yaşama karşı olumlu tavır, kendinin farkında olma ve yeniliklere açık olma) puanlar alınabilmektedir. Elde edilen bulgulara göre, kadın psikolojik danışman adaylarının mesleğe ilişkin kişisel eğilimlerinin erkek psikolojik danışman adaylarına göre daha yüksek olduğu görülmektedir. Dört yıllık eğitimle mesleğe ilişkin kişisel eğilimlerde olan değişiklikler değerlendirildiğinde psikolojik danışman adaylarının kişilerarası ilişkilere özen ve kendinin farkında olma özelliklerinde iyileşme eğilimi gözlenmiştir. Bulgular psikolojik danışma alanını planlayarak seçenlerin mesleğe ilişkin kişisel eğilimlerinin diğer nedenlerle seçenlere göre daha yüksek olduğunu göstermektedir. Psikolojik danışma alanını başkalarına yardımcı olduğu için önemli bulanların mesleğe ilişkin kişisel eğilim puanları diğer görüşlerde olan gruplara göre daha yüksek bulunmuştur. Bulgular alanyazın ışığında tartışılmış ve bazı öneriler sunulmuştur.
