The Effect of Using Models on Academic Achievement and Continuance of Knowledge in Teaching of the Matter and Heat Unit

Özet

Bu çalışmada, madde ve ısı ünitesinin öğretilmesinde, model kullanımının öğrencilerin akademik başarısına ve bilgilerin kalıcılığına etkisi incelenmiştir. Araştırmada, madde ve ısı ünitesinin konularıyla ilgili olarak araştırmacı tarafından uygun modeller yapılmış ve deney grubu öğrencilerine konular, bu modellerle desteklenerek anlatılmıştır. Araştırma için; Kastamonu il merkezinde bulunan bir ortaokulun altıncı sınıflarından biri kontrol, diğeri ise deney grubu olmak üzere iki şube rasgele seçilmiştir. Veri toplama aracı olarak madde ve ısı ünitesi ile ilgili 30 soruluk bir başarı testi kullanılmıştır. Bu test, uygulamadan önce grupların bilgilerini ölçmek için ön-test olarak uygulanmış, uygulama bittikten sonra da, her iki grubun başarılarını ölçmek için, son-test olarak uygulanmıştır. Son olarak ta, öğrenilen bilgilerin ne kadarının hatırlandığını ölçmek için, dört hafta sonra aynı test kalıcılık testi olarak uygulanmıştır. Bu araştırmada elde edilen veriler ışığında; ortaokul altıncı sınıf öğrencilerine madde ve ısı ünitesinin öğretilmesinde model kullanımının akademik başarıyı artırdığı ve öğrenilen bilgilerin daha uzun süre hafızada kaldığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Abstract

In this study, it has been investigated the effects of using models on students’ academic achievement and continuance of knowledge in teaching of matter and heat unit. In the research, the appropriate models related to the subjects of mater and heat unit were made by researcher and the subjects to students in the experimental group were lectured by supporting these models. For this research, two classes were randomly selected as control and experimental groups from at a secondary school in the city center of Kastamonu in Turkey. As a means of collecting data, an achievement test, which consisted of 30 questions, was used as pre-test to measure prior knowledge of groups. After the application finished, the same test was administered as a post-test to measure the success of both groups. After four weeks the application finished, the same test was administered as a continuance test to measure what students recall. In the light of the data obtained from this study, it has been found out that using models increases the sixth grade secondary school students’ academic achievement and provides remaining students learned knowledge in their memory for a long time
