Abstract

Kanaat (contentment) is to consent to what has been given and to be content with what has been achieved. From this definition, the meaning of kanaat should not be taken to mean that it is not to work or it is to be lazy. Kanaat requires working, making an effort, and in the end, consenting to the sustenance that has been achieved, even if it is minuscule. A person who is contented (kanaatkâr) is a person who is pleased with abound and does not get sad with scarcity a person who is in peace and tranquility in either cases. Kanaat is an ascetic understanding that does not value the world commodity in the heart. A contented person escapes the contempt of falling for the em-barrassment of asking for something from people and being in need of some-one else, because he is content with less and does not need more. The con-tented person is only afraid of Allah, and expects from and trusts in Him. Be-cause, he knows that no one but Allah can grant or obstruct sustenance. Ka-naat is a trait that also contain in itself the understandings of consent, asceti-cism, trust, fear, hope, and gratitude to Allah. There is no limit to the demands of one’s soul. When a request of it is fulfilled, it immediately impulses the other desire. It is the kanaat that is the remedy to liberate the heart from one’s soul. If the heart contents itself with less by consenting to the foreordination, the soul will not be able to affect the heart. In this respect, kanaat, which is being satisfied with less, is an important method of abstemiousness that enables the training of the soul. The person who is contented is someone who knows how the blessing is acquired, avoids wasting, and is frugal. It is known that many people who had not spent according to their income, who had been in luxury and wasted, lost their assets and have become dependent on others. Ambi-tion, cupidity, wasting, and a desire for living long, which inhibit contentment, disturb the social order by not only harming the individual himself, but also his family and the society.
