Slums in The Short Stories of Burhan Günel, A Socialist Realist Author

Abstract
One of the authors in our literature that wrote fiction from a socialist-realistperspective is Burhan Günel. Günel broadly reflected his socialist realist orientationinto his short stories and narrated the life stories especially of the people from thelower segments of the society with accounts based on solid observations. In hisnarrative, he made frequent use of portraiture. One phenomenon narrated by the authorfor depicting social conditions is the reality of “slums”. In the first chapter of thisanalysis, the socialist realist perspective of Günel and in the logical framework of thesecond chapter, the phenomenon of “slums” were focused on. In the third chapter ofthis study, the author’s approach towards the reality of slums in his short stories wasdiscussed. In the fourth chapter, citations about life in slums were included from someof Günel’s short stories, where the setting is Ankara, the city in which he spent asignificant part of his life.
