Abstract

Turhal is located in the Central Black Sea Region through which the North Anatolian Fault passes and that shows interesting features in terms of young tectonic movements and geomorphological relations in the Black Sea Region. Turhal city, which constitutes the research area, was established and developed on a tectonicorigin, alluvial-filled depression plain. Physical geographical features should be taken into account while determining the location of the cities or doing urban planning. Because the most important factor that ensures the continuity, functional continuity or sustainability of cities is geographical environmental factors. If physical geographical conditions do not allow, it will not be possible for the city to gain power and maintain its continuity. The place where the research area was established and where it continues to develop is under the control of geological and geomorphological features, and it obliges the population that lives on it to live with significant geologicalgeomorphological risks and also offers various advantages for the city population in terms of economic functions. It has been determined in the investigations that the research area has developed by the neglect of geological features and has reached the present day. In Turhal, the geological structure has affected the city from two aspects. The first one is that the city has an important risk in terms of seismicity. The second one is that it contributes to the economic structure of the city and the industry which is economically based on stone-land. Seismicity is one of the important natural problems of the city and significantly threatens the future of the city population consisting of 61,726 people according to the data of TUIK (Turkish Statistical Institute) for 2015. The realization of urban transformation based on the latest earthquake regulations in Turhal is necessary to minimize the damage level of a possible earthquake. This is important for the continuity of the population living in Turhal.
