Abstract
Since the early years of Islam, lecture rings have been established in the places where people gather and these places have the characteristic of being non-formal education institutions. During the Ottoman period, religious education was widely carried out in places where people gathered, such as mosques, dervish lodges and village rooms, where this tradition was intact. In addition to the sermons made in these places, certain books especially read in village rooms and houses formed the basis of this education. Some religious books, which were effective in determining the religious understanding of the people within the scope of non-formal education and which were often read at the time, contained inaccurate information. The aim of this article is to evaluate the books entitled Muhammediye, Envârü’lÂşıkîn, Müzekki’n-Nüfûs, and Kara Davut, which were influential in determining the religious understanding of the people within the scope of non-formal education and which were read by the majority at that time. In this study, especially the narratives that contradict the Qur'an and Sunnah in these books were examined. In the article, document analysis method was used and the data were evaluated using content analysis. There have been attempts to close this gap, which has often been insufficient in learning and understanding and taking folk religious knowledge and putting it at the center of life. The false teachings of some cults, superstitions, superstitions, and Israelites, which do not conform to the Qur'an and Sunnah, and sometimes hearsay information, which are heard orally, have had an effect on people. Fame, money, etc. in mosques and masjids or in places where there is a large community of people, the narratives of parable preachers who preach for purposes and always decorate their sermons with stories have also succeeded in filling this gap and attracted the attention of the public. The influence of cults is more evident in the formation of the perception of religion in the Ottoman Empire than in the madrasas. Because most of the books read at that time are from Sufism. The language of these works is Turkish, oriented towards practical life, the imagination of the society, the information needed to be presented in a simple but concrete form, the story and narrations to be given place, Angel hereafter Paradise hell, etc. the preference of mythical narratives due to the influence of Sufism on the subjects of the unseen has increased the public's demand for these works. These works, which mobilize the religious feelings of the people and are intended to give an Islamic identity to the public, have the potential to create a false perception of religion from time to time by directing to a superstition based life (fatalism, laziness, negative view of women, etc.) that does not conform to the basic principles of religion. At that time, the scholars who grew up in the madrasa were not very successful in putting alternative works that were Turkish language, easily understood and prepared for the public. Thus, these works were read and the information in them was mostly adopted without question, and a religious understanding was formed in this direction. The fact that these works are being published today shows that these books, which contain much false and objectionable information, are still regarded and respected by our people and are among the sources of public piety.
