Investigation of Teachers' Awareness Levels on the Characteristics of Gifted Students in Terms of Different Variables

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the awareness levels of teachers about the characteristics of gifted students in terms of different variables. The study, which is descriptive in nature, adopted screening model. Teachers’ awareness about the characteristics of gifted students were identified through a questionnaire. The first section of the questionnaire included questions about the teachers’ personal characteristics and the second part included 30 items responded on a 5-point Likert scale. The study was conducted with 95 teachers, 54 branch teachers and 41 classroom teachers, who work in central towns of Adana. Data collected from the questionnaire were analysed using descriptive statistics methods. T-test and one-way analysis of variance were performed to find out if there were any differences in terms of the variables investigated (branch, gender, years of experience, education level, etc.) In conclusion, teachers were found to have high awareness about the characteristics of gifted students. In terms of the variables examined, it was determined that there was no significant difference between the level of awareness of teachers according to gender, seniority and branches. Özet

Bu araştırmanın amacı öğretmenlerin üstün yetenekli öğrencilerin özelliklerine yönelik farkındalık düzeylerinin farklı değişkenler açısından incelenmesidir. Araştırma tarama modelinde betimsel bir araştırmadır. Veri toplama aracı olarak anket uygulanmıştır. Anketin birinci bölümünde öğretmenlerin kişisel özelliklerine yönelik sorular, ikinci bölümünde ise beşli likert olarak yanıtlanan 30 madde yer almaktadır. Araştırmaya Adana ilinin merkez ilçelerinden birinde görev yapmakta olan 54’ü branş, 41’si sınıf öğretmeni olmak üzere toplam 95 öğretmen katılmıştır. Anket formundan elde edilen veriler betimsel istatistik yöntemleri, ele alınan değişkenler (branş, cinsiyet, kıdem, öğrenim durumu vb.) açısından fark olup olmadığı ise t testi ve tek yönlü varyans analizi ile incelenmiştir. Sonuç olarak öğretmenlerin üstün yetenekli öğrencilerin özelliklerine yönelik yüksek düzeyde farkındalığa sahip olduğu belirlenmiştir. Ele alınan değişkenler açısından bakıldığında öğretmenlerin, cinsiyetine, kıdemine ve branşlarına göre farkındalık düzeyleri arasında anlamlı bir fark olmadığı belirlenmiştir. Ancak, öğretmenlerin mezun oldukları fakültelere göre fen edebiyat fakültesi mezunları ile eğitim enstitüsü mezunları arasında eğitim enstitüsü mezunları lehine anlamlı fark belirlenmiştir.
