Abstract

Located in the Central-Western Anatolia, Murat Mountain forms a natural border between Kütahya and Uşak provinces. Rising up to 2309 m with its KartalTepe summit, it is the highest mountain in Aegean Region after Honaz Mountain (2528 m). As a source of the important branches of rivers running through the basins of Aegean Sea and Black Sea, it is a sort of reservoir of the area. Besides the fluvial topography dominated by deep valleys, depending on glacial topography and bedrock diversity, with its volcanic, karst and granite topography, Murat Mountain is also rather rich in endemic plant species. 116 of the 890 taxa having been determined in researches so far are endemic to Turkey. The area, with its endemic species rate of 13%, harbours certain unique species. It is aimed in this research to determine the topographic factors affecting the distribution of endemic plant species, in whose global distribution various geographical factors are effective, in Murat Mountain. For this purpose, 115 localities harbouring the endemic species were researched and statistical analyses of the topographic characteristics determined were conducted. The relation between the endemic species and the topographic variables belonging to their habitats was analysed through assessment of the descriptive statistical data. Accordingly, it was found that location and topographic characteristics of Murat Mountain is a factor in the habitats of endemic species and that Irano-Turanian element are found mainly on the NW slopes while Euro-Siberian elements are dominant on the N slopes and Mediterranean elements are common on the slopes facing SW and NW. 73 % of all endemic species grow at an slightly undulating surface extending elevation between 1400 and 2000 m where the soil and parent material have sufficient available water content. The annual average temperature at this range is about 5-9 ºC and the annual average precipitation is about 780-1360 mm. The endemics are valley bottoms containing the most isolation conditions. It was determined that the endemism in the area increases in carbonated sedimentary rocks composed mostly of limestone of Mesozoic era; that there is no soil or vegetation particularity; and that parent material and topographic factors like altitude, aspectand slope inclination are determinants
