Abstract

Numerous studies on the effects of the noise problem on human health, which was accepted as environmental pollution with the "Green Paper" declaration published by the European Commission in 1996, and the directives of international organizations encourage governments to take measures in this regard. Therefore, regulations against noise pollution, including limitations are being published. According to these regulations, measures must be taken at the envelope of the building to ensure noise control within buildings. Since the opaque element is the weak part of the envelope, its technical properties are important in terms of acoustic performance. In the acoustic analysing tools, frameless "simple glass sections" are modelled, using single-glazing, and multiple-glazing. As a result, the parts of the window system such as joinery material, opening style, insulation of overlaps or sealing, and the use of secondary glazing are neglected. In the literature, there are measurements including window systems. However, there is no comparison study about these measurements and “simple glass sections” modelled in the calculation tools. Thus, evaluating the effect of neglected technical properties on acoustic performance is needed. In this study, the effect of joinery material, opening style, insulation and secondary glazing on the acoustic performance is examined in the first step. Then the results obtained in INSUL Acoustic Calculator V8 software using “simple glass sections” are compared with measured values obtained in the literature. It is observed that the effect of joinery material, opening style, secondary glazing and simple sealing on the acoustic performance vary within the range of ±3 dB, whilst a 7 dB difference occurred in advanced insulation.
