Abstract

There are various and multidimensional tendencies in Islamic thought. These tendencies have emerged for different reasons over time and continue to develop today without breaking their ties with the past. One of the most important representatives of this thought is mystics. Mystics, who interpreted religious texts (naṣṣ) with mystical and esoteric (irfān) dimension, developed their own methods in the interpretation of the Qur’ān. Scholars of the Qur’ān (mufassirs) called this aspect of interpretation “ishārī (esoteric and mystical) tafsīr” or “ishārī interpretation". The information sources of this method, which the Sufis built on the żāhir and bāṭ.in dualism, are mostly subjective knowledge theory based on inspiration, discovery and intuition. Sūfīs’ presentation of these interpretations, which emerged in their hearts based on their own experiences, as interpretations of verses, led to some extreme interpretations that went beyond the main purpose of the religious texts. These comments, which are not based on authentic news and correct reason, have been the subject of criticism from time to time. Accordingly, some conditions have been determined for the acceptance of ishārī (esoteric and mystical) tafsīr; while the ishārī comments that comply with the conditions in question are deemed acceptable, the extreme comments that do not comply with the conditions are not accepted. In this study, have been discussed the reasons for the emergence of ishārī tafsīr and interpretation in the historical process, its definition, acceptance conditions and limits. In this context, the 35th verse of the Sūrat al-Nūr, also known as the “Nūr verse”, which is one of the verses in the Qur’ān in which representation and symbolic expressions are most intense, was chosen as sample. Certain Sūfī tafsīr works written since the formation process of ishārī tafsīr have been examined and approaches to representations and metaphorical expressions in the verse have been analysed.
