Abstract

Anatolia witnessed the mass migration of the Celts, whom we know moved from the Balkans to Hellas in the 3rd century BC and then migrated in tribal formations to Asia Minor. With the initiation of the Galatians’ adventure in Anatolia, whose migration to Anatolia is approximately stated as 278/77 BC, the sources started mentioning the names of the three tribes belonging to this community. These tribes, called Tolistobogii, Trocmi, and Tectosages, are referred to as three gentes/ populis/ ethnos. The Trocmi settled in Hellespontos, the Tolistobogii in Ionia, and the Tectosages in regions of Phrygia. In 25 BC, the province of Galatia was founded, and later, the newly established city of Ancyra was incorporated into lands of the Tectosages. According to epigraphic findings, the name of the city was associated with the Tectosages and was named Sebaste Tectosages (Σεβαστὴ Τεκτοςάγης). This study focuses on historical context of the Galatian tribe Tectosages in the city of Ancyra during the Roman period. In other words, in this study, the process from the origins of Galatian Tectosages in Europe to their presence in the Ankara region is examined, encompassing the historical existence of Tectosages and furthermore their position in the Roman-era Ankyra is discussed. While doing this, the inscriptions and sources related to specific Roman-era Ancyra, which refer to the Tectosages tribe, are the starting point. The Priests List on the antae wall of the Temple of Augustus, surviving statue bases and coins signifies that Tectosages were integrated into the empire in multi-dimensions while preserving certain aspects of their Celtic. Under the rule of Augustus, the inclusion of the Galatians into the Roman Empire and the Galatian elites entered the imperial service and were thus being perceived as the carriers of Roman duties and responsibilities. The dynamic role of the Galatians in Ankyra’nın foundation myths are also considered in this context. The Galatian cultural heritage underwent Hellenistic influence and gradually became compatible with the empire.
