Abstract

In modern economies, various types of activity, including agriculture, industry and transportation, produce a large amount of wastes and new types of pollutants. Soil, air and water have traditionally been used as sites for the disposal of all these wastes. The main aim of this study was to investigate the heavy metal concentrations of forest soils in relation to soil depths and the distances from the municipality solid waste dumping site. For this purpose, soil samples were taken from nearby the dumping place and carried out from a distances of 100 m, 200 m, 300 m, 750 m and 2000 m. The soil samples were collected from four different soil depths (0-5cm, 5-10 cm, 10-15 cm and 15-20 cm). The soil samples were analysed for pH, texture (sand, silt and clay) and heavy metal concentrations (Zn, Pb, Ni, Cu, Cr and Cd). The results showed that there was a significant relationship between the heavy metal concentrations in forest soil and the distance to the soild waste dumping site. It was noted that the heavy metal concentrations in the soil (excluding Cd) increased with the distance from the soild waste dumping site. It is concluded that the high heavy metal concentrations of the soils at long distances may be due to the strong winds carred these elements into the surrounding forested areas after the fires in the solid waste dump site.
