Abstract

The most striking environmental issue on the international agenda in recent years is global climate change. Increasing concerns about the problem of climate change, especially since the 21st century, compelled countries to take measures at the national and international level. In this study, the content of international agreements made under the umbrella of the United Nations for climate change intervention, the development process and Turkey's attitude towards these agreements are explained. The fact that the effects of climate change will go beyond the borders and cause a global problem has left national efforts insufficient and necessitated an international intervention. With the thought that it will become an irreversible problem if the necessary measures are not taken on time, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was opened for signature in 1992, the Kyoto Protocol entered into force in 2005 and the Paris Agreement was put into effect in 2016. Since Turkey is considered as a developed country in international agreements, it initially stayed away from these agreements. The country, which managed to change its position in the framework agreement as a result of the negotiations, put the Paris Agreement into effect on October 7, 2021, even though it still has some objections.
