Abstract

The limited natural resources resulting from the Industrial Revolution's unlimited use have led to environmental events such as melting polar ice caps, thinning of the ozone layer, water pollution, and global warming, which have significant negative consequences. Therefore, approaches that could be a solution to the problems related to human and environmental health are being developed. The production of energy-saving, environmentally friendly, and recyclable materials has come to the fore. In recent years, sustainability, which is referred to as the most effective solution to these problems, is defined as a set of approaches that require the need to continue the lives of not only today but also future generations on existing resources while the earth's resources are rapidly depleting. Sustainable development principles support reducing the environmental impacts, waste production, and resource consumption during the construction production process. As the built environment is one of the most consuming factors of natural resources, efforts continue to minimize the negative effects of buildings. For this purpose, green building certification systems are established, and it is aimed to support the development of projects in this direction starting from the design phase. In this study, using the case study method, the sustainable material and building element usage levels are aimed to be measured by examining twenty office building projects in Türkiye that have the LEED certification, which is one of the widespread green building rating systems worldwide. Within the scope of the research, the scores obtained from eight criteria under the "Materials and Resources" title of the LEED certification system were used. According to the results obtained, it has been determined that even in projects with a high level of LEED certification, the use of sustainable materials and building elements remains inadequate.
