Abstract

which has a rich cultural diversity with features that have come from history to the present day. Social changes experienced in the last seventy years have also changed the role of museums in society, making it necessary for museums to understand the community. Museums conduct various activities to research, communicate, and preserve the cultural heritage of different cultures in their regions. Hopa Cultural House, located in the Hopa district of Artvin and converted from traditional architecture to a museum, has been designated as the study area. The qualitative research case study technique was used as the research method. In the study, the situation of repurposing the traditional residential structure as a museum is addressed from the perspective of spatial legibility, taking into account the visual perception components. In the context of repurposing the traditional residence as a museum, interviews, spatial analysis, and on-site observation were conducted to identify interventions made to the residence. The aim is to determine the spatial quality in traditional structures, particularly in the Hopa Cultural House that has become a museum, which is approached in terms of ensuring the sustainability of traditional architectural examples evaluated within the scope of cultural heritage. It has been observed that the museum function of a house is suitable for the continuity of residential structures, and the authenticity of the existing structure is preserved when used as a museum. The museum has been examined in terms of spatial harmony, narrative, and quality, and a literature review has been conducted based on the data obtained. A field literature review was conducted by utilizing secondary sources such as published studies on museums transformed from traditional architectural examples, news sources, and websites of selected museums. Determining the spatial qualities of the structure used as a museum by identifying its current state serves as an example for future studies.
