Orhan Okay, who is an original intellectual with his ideas about history, society and civilization as well as his knowledge of the field of new Turkish Literature, has the opportunity to get to know Eastern and Western civilizations closely and analyze them with many fronts. Evaluating both civilizations with their cities of historical and cultural importance, Okay's attention to Paris and Istanbul is focused on symbolic values; history, culture, art, architecture, religion and public life are reflected as embodied passports of these values. Evaluating the two cities with their silhouette half a century ago in Bir Başka İstanbul and Bir Başka Paris, Okay's reviews and comments about corruption occurring in cities with the modernization process are important for culture, civilization and the history of society. Kadim medeniyetlere başkentlik yapan şehirler, mimari ve abidevi yapılarıyla toplumların yaşam biçimlerini, kültürel ve manevi değerlerini yansıtır. Yeni Türk Edebiyatı sahasına kazandırdığı ilmî çalışmalarının yanı sıra tarih, toplum ve medeniyet hakkındaki düşünceleriyle de özgün bir aydın olan Orhan Okay, Doğu ve Batı medeniyetlerini yakından tanıyıp birçok cephesiyle tahlil etme imkânı bulur. Her iki medeniyeti tarihî ve kültürel önemi olan şehirleriyle değerlendiren Okay’ın Paris ve İstanbul’a dair dikkatleri sembol değerler üzerinde yoğunlaşır; tarih, kültür, sanat, mimari, din ve toplum hayatı bu değerlerin cisimleşmiş vesikaları olarak yansıtılır. Bir Başka İstanbul ve Bir Başka Paris adlı eserlerinde iki şehri yarım asır önceki siluetiyle değerlendiren Okay’ın modernleşme süreciyle birlikte şehirlerde meydana gelen yozlaşmaya dair tenkit ve yorumları, kültür, medeniyet ve toplum tarihi açısından önemlidir. Bu çalışmada, Bir Başka İstanbul ve Bir Başka Paris adlı eserlerinden hareketle Prof. Dr. Orhan Okay’ın kültür, medeniyet, sanat ve toplum hayatı bağlamında Paris ve İstanbul’a bakış açısı tespit edilecektir.
