Abstract

Facebook,MySpace,Flickrand YouTube are currently among the most frequentlyvisitedwebsiteswithWeb 2.0 features. They are used not onlyforsocialnetworkingandentertainmentbutalsofor access to information, forlearning and for carryingoutprofessionalwork. Social networkscommonlyhave Web2.0 features, offer personalizedservicesandallowusersto incorporate theirowncontenteasilyand describe, organize and share itwith others, therebyenrichingusers' experience. Some users tendto “live” onthosesocial networks andexpect informationproviding organizationsto offersimilarservices. They wantlibraries to beas accessible, flexible, opento collaboration and sharing asthat of social networksand heightentheexpectationsfrom suchinstitutions. Thefuture oflibraries is closely associatedwithhow successfully theymeet the demands of digital users.Otherwise, the“netgeneration” orthe“digitalnatives” grownupwiththeWeb, Google andFacebookwouldsee libraries asoutdatedinstitutions and “taketheirbusinesselsewhere”tosatisfytheirinformationneeds.Inthis paper, theimpactof thetechnologicalconvergenceon informationproviding organizationsis reviewed and the challenges andopportunitiesfacing libraries in the digital environmentare discussed
