Abstract

INTRODUCTION Ramadan fasting increases the rates of various problems such as peptic ulcer, volvulus and mesenteric ischemia. In our study we aimed to analyze the effect of Ramadan fasting on ileus.METHODSIn this retrospective study patients admitted to the emergency service and operated with the diagnosis of ileus were evaluated. Having a Ramadan fasting month or not was the independent variable of the study. The dependent variables including the age, gender, operation type and intraoperative findings were compared. RESULTSThe study included 578 patients with a median age of 51 (18-88) and a female/male ratio of 0.39. A total of 49 and 529 patients were operated within 50 consecutive Ramadan and 550 non-Ramadan months, respectively. The study findings were not related with the Ramadan fasting status (p=0.571). In addition, presence of obstructive mass and brids, and the type of the ileus were not correlated with Ramadan (p=0.969).CONCLUSIONRamadan fasting seems unrelated with ileus resulting in emergency operations.
