Abstract

This article explores a conceptual and methodological tension between the sociology of art and art literature that emergesfrom their respective disciplinary boundaries and different conceptualizations of art. Rather than addressing particulartheories pertinent to the sociology of art, this work examines two interrelated arguments. The first is that art can be regardedas an image, a claim inspired by a specific ontological definition of art from Arthur Danto. Second is the claim that theconception of art as image shall radically transform not only the aesthetic accounts of art but also the sociology thereof.
